Beyond Precision Machining: Laser Marking, Assembly, and Passivation at KT Tech

At KT Tech, customers know our precision machining services well. But for many projects, machining is only part of the process. We offer several value-added services in house, including laser marking, assembly, and passivation. By handling these steps directly, we can help you simplify your supply chain and reduce your lead times.

Laser Marking: Clear, Durable Part Identification

When we first opened our shop, mechanical engraving was often the standard callout on customer drawings. Now, we more often see laser marking requested, with mechanical engraving listed as an acceptable backup option.

Whether the shift reflects a change in broader industry preferences or just our customers’ own experience with laser marking, the benefits are clear. In most cases, laser marking produces sharper and clearer results than mechanical engraving, especially when contrast is important.

On stainless steel, for example, laser marking creates a dark mark that is easy to read. However, mechanical engraving on stainless remains the same general color as the base

material and is harder to see.

Multiple Laser Options: CO2 and Fiber Laser

At KT Tech, we offer both fiber laser marking and CO2 laser marking. Having both options gives us more flexibility across different materials and applications. Some materials are more challenging to mark than others, but multiple laser options allow us to choose the best process for the part.

White Delrin, for example, does not produce the same high-contrast mark as stainless steel. However, we can still use our CO2 laser to create a legible mark. Even without a color contrast, the laser-marked surface has a different texture that can make it easier to read than a mechanically engraved mark.

In-House Assembly Services to Prevent Fit Issues

Assembly can significantly simplify customer projects. Instead of receiving machined parts and completing the final assembly step on your own, you can work with KT Tech to have more of the project completed before it reaches your facility.

This can be especially valuable during prototype development. In early-stage projects, drawings are often still undergoing revisions, and assemblies do not always come together perfectly on the first attempt. If a customer handles assembly internally, they may discover a fit or function issue and need to send the parts back for adjustment.

But when we manage the entire assembly order, we can identify those issues earlier. Customers can tell us about the product’s functionality, and we can help make informed adjustments when needed for better fit. Because we have both engineering expertise and CNC machines in the same facility, we can make those changes safely and quickly.

Assembly can also result in more competitive pricing and shorter lead times. Keeping more steps in-house reduces the handoffs and challenges that can occur when multiple suppliers are involved.

Passivation: Corrosion Protection Is Faster In-House

Passivation is a common metal finishing process that helps protect stainless steel parts from corrosion. And while the step is fairly straightforward, outsourcing passivation can add unnecessary time to a project.

Sending parts to an outside vendor can require one to three days, which may not work for projects with a compressed timeline. That can sometimes be the case in our rapid prototype services.

Before we offered passivation in house, customers occasionally chose to skip the process because they could not afford to add to their lead time. But that creates long-term risk if corrosion resistance is important for the part.

Our in-house passivation offers corrosion protection with essentially no impact on lead time. In most cases, passivation adds hours rather than days. You’ll receive the proper finish for your parts without losing any speed.

Let KT Tech Simplify Your Project

In addition to laser marking, assembly, and passivation, KT Tech can also help coordinate other outside processes when a project requires them. But our in-house secondary services are especially valuable because they can reduce your lead times, help control costs, and simplify communication.
